The big chat war between Microsoft Teams and Slack starts today.

Microsoft’s business chat, Microsoft Teams are coming out today. And, in the first instance, it will be a threat for Slack. Both sides have shown their fear for each other system, and it only proves that there is a lot at stake.

Microsoft does not want at any price to lose this war. The company sees the chat platform as a product that soon will replace e-mail as the primal communication tool.

If Slack would start getting a part of companies businesses, this may, in the end, pose a threat to Microsoft’s more or less monopoly on the businesses market. It does not help that Slack has close ties with Google and their entire productivity suite.

Both sides have shown great respect for each other system. This has also made Microsoft go out hard. Teams will be included in all versions of Office 365 at no additional cost. It will be rolled out automatically to all business customers who have Office 365. It’s something that will be a serious circumstance for competitors.

In the autumn of 2016, when Microsoft unveiled its new platform. Slack bought a full-page ad in New York Times in which they explained the excellence of the “original”.

So which option is the best one?

Slack is more open than Microsoft Teams. It acts as a communication hub between different services, it’s easy to integrate with an example, Google Hangouts or Github. But it is also possible to invite external participants and create groups of independent organisations.

It’s something that Microsoft Teams can’t offer, at least not yet and it will be a challenge for Microsoft. But the ability to invite external participants is something that Microsoft already has promised to come in later updates.

Slack is quite technical; it’s on edge to be a frontier of programming, and very much command driven. It’s never a problem to the administrator. But most users want a more visual interaction, and this is something that speaks against Slack.

A common perception is that Slack is strongest among smaller companies – and Microsoft with their contacts in the corporate world can enter the market on the way.
